Decode a Confusing Letter or Email into Plain English
Who it's for: Anyone who got a bill, notice, or policy update and doesn't understand it
The problem
A letter from your landlord, insurer, school, or utility is full of jargon. You are not sure what they want, whether there is a deadline, or if you need to do anything.
Copy-paste prompt
Works on free ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. Replace everything in [brackets].
Please explain the text below in plain English, like you're talking to a smart friend who has never seen this kind of document. Give me: 1. One-sentence summary: what is this and what does it want from me? 2. Any deadlines or dollar amounts, listed clearly. If none, say "none found". 3. What I need to do, as a short checklist (or "nothing" if nothing). 4. Words or phrases that could be confusing, with simple definitions. 5. Two questions I should ask the sender if I am unsure. Do not guess. If something is unclear in the text, say it is unclear. Remind me this is not legal or financial advice. TEXT: [paste the text here, with names, account numbers and addresses replaced by [NAME], [ACCT], [ADDRESS]]
What good output looks like
A short summary you could repeat out loud, a clearly marked deadline (or "none found"), a 2 to 4 item checklist, and honest "this part is unclear" notes instead of confident guesses.
Common mistake
Pasting only half the letter, or a photo-to-text copy full of typos, then trusting the answer. Check any date or dollar amount against the original. The AI can misread numbers.
Next step
Ask: "Draft a short, polite reply asking them to clarify X." Read it, edit it, and send it yourself.
AI can be wrong. Check anything important before you rely on it.
